We took this picture of two neighboring lawns a couple of days ago (they’re around the corner from our house). As you can clearly see, the homeowner on the left does not water the lawn; the one on the right does (continually). It hasn’t rained much in the past three weeks, so the lawn on the left is dormant–not dead, just waiting quietly for more moisture and cooler weather. As soon as it rains, this lawn will green up and will look exactly the same as the lawn on the right. The only difference will be the water that the homeowner on the right is wasting (and paying for).
Over the past few years, many homeowners have stopped excessive watering and allowed their lawns to go dormant in the heat. Notice the difference as you walk, bike, or drive through your town. It’s a wonderful change.
