2/5/16: In the garden this week

DSCN1240

This morning’s snow was exquisitely evanescent–it’s already gone!

After a couple of springlike days, the Big Snow disappeared this week; this morning,t we awoke to a new and quite lovely snow, but that’s gone too. At least we’re getting plenty of precipitation, so we don’t have to water the plants we put in last season.

Now that you can get to your shrubs, it’s still time to prune. It’s also not too early to order your vegetable seeds and start many varieties indoors: you’ll find a planting calendar here. Take a look at my latest Backyard Environmentalist column for many other winter gardening possibilities. And have a great week!

Winter is a great time for spotting wildlife in the garden, such as this magnificent hawk that often takes up a post in one of our trees.
